The inspiration for this piece, Mr. And Mrs. Albert Thornton, is Gordon Parks’ book Segregation. This couple spoke to my heart. They look like family and people who are the salt of the earth. I wanted to talk to them and hug them at the end of our conversation. I decided to really have them as the focus, yet still work with color and add a little bit of detail in the background. In the original photograph, they are surrounded by the pink geranium bush. I just wanted to add a little of the pink to add to the green and brown color scheme.
