The inspiration for this work, ¿Qué Pasa Asere? for the series “Las Caras Lindas” was a photo in the book Cuba, by Walker Evans. This book chronicles the lives of the Cuban people in 1933. Cuba has for the most part, been a miserable place to exist for my people “de caras lindas”. I wanted to bring these people to life in a way that compels the viewer to want to get to know their stories, not their misery, but who they are as people. I was drawn to this beautiful face and the confidence she exudes. Once again, color plays an integral role in my work.
