The inspiration for this piece, Remember Augusta Savage, was my interest in finding out more about people from the African diaspora who have been overlooked, but sparked my interest. I was listening to the song “Lift Every Voice and Sing” and came upon the artist who created The Harp sculpture, also named for this song to honor it.This sculpture was a plaster commissioned work for the 1939 New York World’s Fair, but it was eventually destroyed, Augusta was so talented and even renowned, that she had a school created in her name in Baltimore. My heart was moved as I read about her life and accomplishments. I urge people to read about her. She has a worthy story to tell.
