The inspiration for this piece, Salt of the Earth, is Gordon Parks’ book Segregation. I am inspired by his call to document as well as uplift the lives of Black Americans during a time when lies were being told to defame their character . I decided to focus on the young man's eyes and the light and shadows of the leaves surrounding him. I felt he needed to be the focus.
