Tío Juan Juan, 2024
24 x 48 in.
Acrylic on canvas

The inspiration for this work,Tío Juan Juan, for the series “Las Caras Lindas” were the photos in the book Cuba, by Walker Evans. This book chronicles the lives of the Cuban people in 1933. Cuba has for the most part, been a miserable place to exist for my people “ de caras lindas”. I wanted to bring these people to life in a way that compels the viewer to want to get to know their stories, not their misery, but who they are as people. This particular photo reminded me of a giant of a figure in my family whom I had never met, but heard stories about, My Grand Uncle Juan Juan. This is what I imagined he looked like. Once again, color plays an integral role in my work.
