The inspiration for this work, It Is What It Is, for the series “Las Caras Lindas” were the photos in the book Cuba, by Walker Evans. This book chronicles the lives of the Cuban people in 1933. Cuba has for the most part, been a miserable place to exist for my people “ de caras lindas”. I wanted to bring these people to life in a way that compels the viewer to want to get to know their stories, not their misery, but who they are as people. I was drawn to his beautiful face and those eyes!!!!! Once again, color plays an integral role in my work.
